Cheek Augmentation

One of the signs of youth and beauty is a full and defined cheek. As one ages the cheeks begin to sag and become sunken in appearance. Fortunately, high cheekbones can be reproduced. Procedures include surgical or minimally invasive. The goals are to restore plumpness and definition.

The options include cheek implants, mid-face lift, micro-fat grafting, and injectable fillers.

Fat grafting and transfer

Your own fat (taken from another part of the body, such as the thighs, or abdomen) is harvest through standard liposuction techniques, usually under local anesthesia, and re-injected into the cheeks. This procedure requires technical skills that takes time to master.

Fat transfer is probably the most popular option at the moment for long-term cheek fullness. Though some of the fat may be absorbed, most stays and creates a permanent fullness.

The recovery is minimal and most often involves mild bruising. The pain is minimal as well.

Cheek implants

Along with fat grafting, cheek implants are another option for restoring cheek enhancement more permanently. Silicone implants are chosen for the right candidate and usually placed from an incision inside the mouth (intra-oral) though they can also be placed through in incision below the eyes as well. The recovery is fairly short. There is a risk of infection because cheek implants are considered a foreign body, but generally, the risks are low.

Cheek implants will add fullness and thus create a lifting effect.

Fillers and injectables

Dermal fillers, such as Juvaderm, Voluma, Radiesse, are used to fill the cheeks and are categorized as minimally invasive procedures to restore volume lost with age or to provide definition. While there are a variety of injectables available, different ones produce varying effects—and not all of them last the same amount of time.

A mid-facelift is a procedure designed to elevate the mid portion of the face. There are a variety of procedures described to achieve this with varying degrees of efficacy and recovery.

The lift can be performed using “threads” (barbed sutures placed through the skin) or a more elaborate surgical procedure. The aim is the same: to provide definition and a more youthful look.

The type of procedure chosen will depend on the surgeon’s abilities and/or patient’s desires. The recovery will likewise depend on the method chosen.
