Neck Lift

The neck region is definitely an area which reveals a person’s age, and lifestyle! Unfortunately, a person’s genetics also play a role as can weight loss.

The procedure is usually combined with a facelift, but can be done by itself.

Procedure

The procedure varies depending on the patient. It can be done simply with liposuction alone, or combined with chin implant, or actual surgical “lift”. The lift can also be done, depending on the amount needed, using an incision just below the chin or the same incisions as done for a facelift, but more limited.

It is not unusual to combine this procedure with many other procedures.

As often is the case, one must choose their surgeon carefully. One who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and also by the American Board of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Procedure

The procedure can be performed under local, sedation, or general anesthesia. The actual details of the procedure will depend on what is required. For example, a person may only require liposuction. In this case liposuction can be done under local or sedation anesthesia. Another may require tightening of the neck muscles (platysma), also referred to as cervicoplasty or platysmaplasty.

The operation is an outpatient procedure and the recovery is between 5-7 days though sooner if only liposuction.

Recovery

Bruising of the neck and jaws are frequent with liposuction and may continue to swell for up to ten days. Pain medications and cold

compressed help reduce the pain and swelling. The bandage around your neck and head typically can be removed the day after surgery. However, an elastic-type garment must be worn throughout the evening for at least two weeks. Final results will be evident in about three to six months.

If acervicoplasty procedure is performed an incision is made under your chin and behind the ears (or possibly in just one of these locations). The muscles are tightenedand the excess skin is pulled back and secured with permanent sutures or a special type of permanent adhesive glue. A bandage and tape will be applied to the incision locations to reduce swelling and discomfort. An elastic bandage will be applied to your neck and head. The recovery is similar to liposuction.
