Laser Liposuction

Laser liposuction utilizes a laser and cannula to heat, and melt the desired fat to be removed. It utilizes the same method previously described in traditional tumescent liposuction techniques, but utilizes heat to melt the fat. A liposuction cannula is then used to suction the fat and remove it.

The advantages of laser liposuction are mainly less blood loss. This means less or no bruising and allows one to resume work soon after the procedure. However, because of the amount of heat generated a limited amount of fat can be removed at any one time. This allows the surgeon to perform these procedures safely at an outpatient facility and under local anesthesia.

It requires properly trained physicians, preferably board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

A possible disadvantage of laser liposuction is that the fat, which is harvested, may not be suitable to graft. Another words, it may be able to be used to perform fat grafting to the breast or buttocks, or other areas. The data is still early, however.
