Calf Implants (Augmentation)

This procedure is mainly used for individuals who are interested in enhancing their calves. This means either adding more bulk or improving their shape. It is a procedure for men or women. It is also used for those with certain congenital disorders or post-polio deformities.

As with any elective cosmetic procedure it is imperitive to locate a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Another important aspect of this procedure is that the individual must understand that this procedure is a muscle AUGMENTATION (or enhancement) procedure. It is not one to replace the calf. By enhancing the calf muscles the natural beauty of our bodies are magnified.

Procedure

The calf implants are composed of soft silicone, but not gel. They can be customized to fit the right patient.

The surgery takes approximately two and a half hours to perform and generally under general anesthesia, but may be done under sedation anesthesia as well.

The incision is behind the knees and often both muscles (gastrocnemius) are enhanced, but this will depend on the patient and surgeon. In some cases, fat injections into the leg is done to add and enhance the features of the leg.

Recovery

It is not unusual to have a long and painful recover. When the muscles are enhanced there often is edema which lasts a long period of time and results in difficulty in walking at first. Elevating the legs and wearing high heal shoes help minimize swelling and therefore help with the post-operative pain. Patients also are advised to wear compression stockings for several weeks.

Exercise is not recommended for at least 6 weeks and running for about 3 months.
